IOWA Testing Schedule:

Tuesday - Capitalization, Reading Part 2, and Math Computation.
Wednesday - Usage and Expression, Punctuation, and Math Problem Solving.
Thursday & Friday - Make Ups

Language Arts
Each child has successfully built their skills from recognizing and identifying sentences to identifying two main parts of a sentence: the subject and predicate of a sentence. This week students will review all lessons taught in this series relating to sentences and be assessed on Friday.

Reading
Our first week working with these new vocabulary skills was excellent! We will be continuing with this program next week.

We will be reading various stories about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this week. They all review the beliefs and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. These are perfect stories to read for two reasons: because they teach about such great character and the fact that we will be celebrating Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 18.

This month reading incentives are doubled! Not only can your child read 20 minutes to go to the reading party, but they can read to earn a ticket to see the Kane County Cougars! See flyer that went home this Friday. Please turn in Ozzie's Reading Club form after you complete two weeks - that way we can award the progress of getting around the bases.

Please keep reading 20 minutes a night for the Independent Reading Program! Starting January each 20 minute increment read counts for a point up to 20 points – yes, that means an additional reading grade each month for learning to love to read. Your help is greatly appreciated! Please sign on the date the reading was accomplished. This orange folder should be turned in every Monday to make sure they are staying on track. The Independent Reading Folder should be turned in at the end of the month to ensure they can attend the lunch reading party. Keep reading!

Spelling
*No spelling unit this week due to IOWA’s.

Science
The children have begun Chapter 9, Matter. We will continue with Lesson 3 this week, “What are Liquids?” and Lesson 4, “What are Gasses?” We have discussed and written various definitions on notecards in this chapter thus far. There is a lot of information to know. Please review lessons when possible. The information will be found in their science folder in their binder. This will help when the test arrives next week.

Math (Mrs. K's Math class only)
We will have very short math periods this week due to IOWA's. We will continue focusing on numbers – ordinal and place value and applying it to everyday situations. The children will be encouraged to use various manipulatives and strategies to achieve understanding of place value; whether it be understanding through money, unfix cubes, other tangible objects, 100's chart, and various place value charts.

Daily Homework
